The plank is one of the most effective, yet simple exercises for a total body workout

What is it?

Often the simplest of movements result in the greatest gains to your fitness, and this is certainly the case with the plank. A plank is a movement during which you hold your body (the trunk portion) off the ground tight for about 20-30 seconds.

What does it do?

The plank is one of the best exercises for core conditioning, but it also works your glutes and hamstrings, supports proper posture and improves balance.

It may look easy, but its not! Holding the position takes strength and endurance in your abs, back and core.

How to do it?

Start by getting into a press up position. Bend your elbows and rest your weight on to your forearms. Your body should form a straight line from shoulders to ankles. Engage your core by tightening your abdominals while continuing to breathe normally. Hold for about 20-30 seconds, rest for one minute, then repeat several times.
